An outdoor area notorious for being used by strangers meeting for sexual encounters has become the subject of a crackdown.
Part of Tylers Common, Nags Head Lane, near Havering’s border with Brentwood, is now a high priority area for Havering Council’s parks teams and will be subject to increased police patrols.
The area has become a well-known site for “dogging” – slang for engaging in sexual acts in a public or semi-public place or watching others doing so.
A website for “dogging and doggers” describes the site as: “A great place to get naked. Straight, bi, or gay. Some great hiding places to watch others play whilst hidden.”
Local resident Perry Robinson, 19, who lives on a nearby farm, said: “For many years now it was a well known place to go dogging.
“Once I saw a man pulling up his trousers and getting back in his car. Another time my aunt saw two men at it and they just carried on.”
He has hailed the new measures as a victory for “people power”, and said the problem seems to have stopped already. He added: “It’s good to see more police down there now.”
Cllr Andrew Curtin, cabinet member for culture, towns and communities, said: “We always listen to our residents and we have made some small changes that have made a big difference at Tylers Common.
“The area is now on a high priority for the Parks Protection Team and the Park Ranger Service and we have cut back the shrubs that secluded the car park.”
A spokesman for Havering Police said: “We will respond to complaints regarding anti-social behaviour.”

A local senator has said she was “gobsmacked” to learn that around 40 locations in Galway – including near a primary school in Oranmore – have been listed on a website as areas where people engage in sex acts in cars in front of onlookers.
And a Galway Dáil Deputy has called on the Gardaí to monitor the areas and have the website shut down.
The practice, known as ‘dogging’, appears to be spread widely in the city and Salthill, Oranmore and Barna, as well as towns and even small villages across the county.
However, Gardaí have said the law is untested when it comes to the activity, but added they “will not tolerate it”.
Senator Fidelma Healy Eames said the activity is inappropriate, particularly when teenagers on school holidays could be exposed to it.
When contacted by the Connacht Tribune, she said: “I’m gobsmacked. I wasn’t aware of this activity. I’m sure the general public in Oranmore and the other locations wouldn’t want to think this is part of their parish is being used for.
“What is of concern to me is that young people, teenagers, may be exposed to it. There is a vulnerability there. It’s inappropriate,” said Senator Healy Eames.
In all, a total of 38 locations in Galway are listed by users of the UK-based website as locations to watch others having sex in cars in public places. The website has almost 100,000 members.
Galway West Deputy Noel Grealish said it was “absolutely disgusting” that the activity was going on in areas where it could be witnessed by children.
“It’s absolutely disgusting. I’m bringing it to the attention of the Gardaí. I’ll be asking them to monitor these areas, and have the website shut down. God knows what effect this would have on children and young people who might come across it,” said Deputy Grealish.

A UK based website is detailing locations throughout Cork where public sex acts are taking place.
Swing4Ireland.com details 49 different locations across Cork where ‘dogging’ meetings take place. ‘Dogging’ refers to pre-arranged meetings where participants watch couples have sex in their cars, often on roadsides
The list of ‘dogging’ spots include a lay-by on the Mallow-Cork Road, a laneway near a Buttevant school and the Kilworth Woods outside Fermoy.
One user of the website suggests a supermarket carpark in Ballincollig as a potential late night spot. The list of locations has come to light following reports of similar directories detailing dogging areas across the country.
One poster on the website warns of a Garda presence on the Mallow road.
“Beware of police presence. Was there last Tues night when they popped in very sneakely. Bit of a passion killer (for a little bit). We moved on to better pastures,” the anonymous post read.
Another post is by a single male who invites couple to late-night meetings at the Quarterstown Industrial Estate near Mallow’s Sugar Factory.
However, potential participants run the risk of running foul of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 which outlaws the distribution or display in public place of material which is threatening, abusive, insulting or obscene.
Swing4ireland.com has 97,600 registered members, though registration on the site is not necessary to see the list. A search on the site’s domain name shows it is registered to the English-based company Symbios Solutions Ltd.
